Transit Funding Facts [4 of 4]
Looking at operating and capital investments combined, public transit has enjoyed less than half the funding
that roadways received from taxpayer dollars on average over the last ten years, despite having earned more
than seven times the amount of revenue! See Graph K.
In the year 2000, the total per capita funding for roadways was almost 2½ times the amount provided for public
transit.

The message is clear: The picture of transit funding in the Edmonton area needs to change soon if we want to
ensure smarter and more efficient alternatives to the private automobile and quality mobility choices for
our citizens. Transit needs to be allocated the funding necessary to cope with growth and provide the level and
type of service that will attract riders.
