Transit Funding Facts [1 of 4]
Over the past 15 years, many hundreds of kilometres of roadway have been built, repaved, repaired and
reconstructed in Edmonton in order to accommodate the automobile. But the number of transit
operating hours funded annually has remained relatively unchanged. The budgets approved by City
Council have not permitted the addition of significant amounts of transit service. See
Graph A.
Over the same time period, Edmonton's population has grown and continues to grow. With no significant
increase in operating hours, it becomes ever more difficult to provide service levels that will attract
and maintain ridership; distributing the service hours becomes a juggling act for transit planners.
And no service can be made available to qualifying new neighborhoods. Consequently, both the number of
transit service hours per capita [i.e. per person] and service km per
capita have declined, meaning less transit is actually available to Edmontonians. See
