Edmonton's population is growing. Traditional solutions to transportation woes are becoming ineffective and unsustainable: endless paving is an expensive exercise in futility. Rapid transit systems are more efficient people movers. Edmonton's LRT system already carries 36,000 passengers per weekday. Rapid transit systems using reserved right-of-ways are direct and avoid street congestion; they are "time competitive" with private autos and, in fact, can achieve better travel times than automobiles.
