The timely construction of Edmonton's proposed
South LRT extension
requires continued public support to ensure it becomes a reality.
Here are some key reasons why establishing an effective, high
quality rapid transit system is vital to our city:
Edmonton's population is growing. Traditional solutions to transportation woes are
becoming ineffective and unsustainable: endless paving is an expensive exercise in
futility. Rapid transit systems are more efficient people movers. Edmonton's LRT
system already carries 36,000 passengers per weekday. Well designed rapid transit
systems have proven highly successful in attracting ridership and reducing the number
of private automobile trips.
More Information
Rapid transit systems using reserved right-of-ways are direct and avoid street
congestion; they are "time competitive" with private autos and, in fact, can achieve
better travel times than automobiles.
Quality rapid transit promotes business and economic health: It facilitates the quick
and convenient movement of people to and from major business centres such as
Downtown. Such a system will increasingly been seen as a positive influence in
attracting business to the city as well as attracting major future events of the calibre of
the 2001 World Track and Field Championships.
