What is transit funding like across Canada? [1 of 2]

Canada remains the only G7 country where government does not value the role of transit and does not provide significant support for transit systems:

There is NO Federal Government support for public transit

Provincial Governments only invest around 5% of the cost of capital and operating needs

Overall funding of public transit in Canada has declined 18% in the last five years

While reductions in car journeys have been achieved in those American cities making serious investments in public transit, per-capita transit ridership in Canadian cities declined by 25% from 1989 to 1996 as a result of the failure of all levels of government to recognize transit as a superior mobility system and to make adequate investments.
